Between Two Popes

Project Type

Photography

Date

April / May 2025

Documenting the death of a Pope is one of the most solemn and significant events of our era, a unique merging of sacred rituals and global reflection. Pope Francis, a fierce advocate for the poor, peace, and environmental responsibility, left an enduring legacy marked by humanitarian values, notably through his opposition to war and violence.

When Pope Francis passed away, I was already in Rome visiting family. I quickly coordinated with The Sydney Morning Herald, secured accreditation among thousands of international journalists, and prepared my equipment to capture both intimate moments and ceremonial grandeur. My photographic approach prioritized evocative storytelling, focusing on quiet moments of human vulnerability and reflection among the faithful. Using primarily a 24–70mm lens, I aimed for intimacy and emotional depth, inviting viewers to reflect rather than simply observe.

The subsequent Conclave and election of Pope Leo XIV further highlighted significant shifts within the Catholic Church and global society. Pope Leo XIV’s immediate call for peace, particularly addressing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, reinforced the Church's evolving role in confronting global challenges. This assignment deepened my dedication to visual journalism that fosters thoughtful engagement and enduring reflection on critical social issues.
