The Bondi Attack

Project type

Photojournalism

Date

14 December 2025

Location

Bondi Beach, Australia

On December 14, 2025, a Jewish Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney was targeted in a deadly attack that police later investigated as terrorism. Authorities said the attack was carried out by a father and son.

I arrived at the scene shortly after the attack began and documented the unfolding emergency response, including armed police securing the area, paramedics treating the injured, and bodies covered at the scene. As the night progressed, the scale of the violence became clearer as multiple casualties were confirmed.

In the days following the attack, Bondi Beach and the surrounding area remained heavily policed. Public space was transformed as access was restricted and security increased. Members of the local community gathered daily near the Bondi Pavilion, where a growing memorial of flowers and candles formed. Vigils were held as mourners came together to grieve those killed.

This work documents both the immediate aftermath of the attack and the collective response that followed, showing how an act of violence altered a place widely associated with safety, leisure, and daily life.
